about

One of our livelier corpses is trying to sweet-talk his way into paradise. He (and I’d guess this one is a he) has not yet let go of his worldly ambitions and values. It has not yet dawned on him that that his fame and riches have no currency in the underworld. Alternatively, this may be the sound of God trying to claw a way back to the throne (The whole idea of god in his heaven never seemed respectable to me in the first place).

lyrics

In the dreary January when the world is blue
I keep a little ray of sunshine just for little you
In the dreary January when all the world is grey
Won’t you have a little something? Brighten up your rainy day?

When I was a rich man I bought a rich man’s toys
All that glitters for the girls and games for all the boys
Oh but in the dreary January life is but a bore
So give them wine and circuses or they shall work no more

Old St. Peter loves a tale and I can talk the talk
If I get him laughing, well, he might just let me walk

I was brightest of our luminaries,
pick of the obituaries,
most eligible corpse in all the cemeteries too
If my price was somewhat mercenary
It was oh so sadly necessary
The souls down here I hear are very profitable too

There’s nothing that can’t be denied
There’s no one can’t be bought
There’s no crime in genocide
There’s only getting caught
The Gods applaud a fine host
Devil take the hindmost

In the dreary January nothing comes for free
So don’t hang around for the trickle down
There’s just enough for me
Don’t hang around for the trickle down
There’s just enough for me
Don’t hang around for the trickle down
There’s just enough for me
For lovely little me
